Spacehall Sound Machine is a psychedelic dance band based in San Diego, CA and established in October 2022. The six piece instrumental ensemble is the brainchild of Matt Bozzone, a drummer who has spent the past 12+ years touring the U.S. with a variety of artists in the global groove scene, including Nigerian afrobeat masters Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 (Fela Kuti’s former band). In 2022, Bozzone and bandmate Mitchum Yacoub (All Town Sound) played percussion for Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 on six U.S. tour dates, including a performance at Desert Daze. Shortly after that, Spacehall was formed.
Spacehall's music is an amalgamation of styles that were created in various parts of the world, across many decades. Their sound is inspired by explosive rhythms from West Africa & Latin America, Jamaican dub, driving post-punk basslines, psychedelic rock, and haunting melodies from the Middle East. They create hypnotic grooves designed to move bodies on the dance floor and take adventurous minds on a journey.
In less than one year since the band’s formation, Spacehall has performed at popular California music festivals, such as Lighting In A Bottle and
Same Same But Different, and have shared the stage with international artists such as Vieux Farka Toure. They released their 1st single in
September 2023 and have a vinyl EP scheduled for release here at Winstons!!
