Join us for a Tuesday Jam!
Derek Trucks’ 10 Commandments of Jam
- Just Listen: Pay attention to what is happening around you on stage rather than being self-involved.
- Respect Musical Space: Do not jump in too soon or overplay; let the music breathe and develop.
- Tell a Story: Never just play scales, fill space, or go through the motions; always have something to say.
- Play an Emotion: Aim to convey a specific feeling, tapping into emotion rather than just notes.
- Never Practice on Stage: Save experimentation and working through new ideas for off-stage; take calculated risks, but do not waste time.
- Treat the Stage as a Church: Respect the art and the moment.
- Ensure Intentions are Right: Play for the love of the music, not for ego or careerism.
- Make the Band Sound Better: Serve the group and the music; sometimes, not playing is better than overplaying.
- Educate with Music: Constantly move forward and explore new things rather than repeating old tricks.
- Mean What You Play: Commit to every note and action
